At Chesapeake Connection, we believe identity is something to be celebrated—not defined by limitations, diagnoses, or expectations set by others. Every person we support brings a unique story, a distinct voice, and a powerful sense of self that deserves to be seen, honored, and uplifted.
For adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, growth doesn’t follow a single path. And independence doesn’t look the same for everyone. That’s not a weakness—it’s a strength.
Redefining What Independence Really Means
Independence is often misunderstood. Too often, it’s framed as doing everything alone. But real independence is about choice, agency, and self-determination.
For some, independence may mean managing their own daily routine or holding a job they’re proud of. For others, it might look like confidently asking for support, making decisions about their life, or advocating for their needs. Independence can be collaborative. It can be supported. And it can evolve over time.
Spotlight: John — Showing Up Matters
John doesn’t believe in sitting on the sidelines.
When asked about independence, he put it plainly:“It’s lazy to stay home.”
For John, independence means getting out into the world—showing up, staying active, and being part of something bigger than himself. Whether he’s participating in community activities, building routines, or engaging with others, John understands that growth happens when you choose to be present.
His perspective reminds us that independence isn’t about isolation—it’s about engagement. It’s about deciding that your time, your energy, and your presence matter.
Celebrating Triumphs Big and Small
Every journey is made up of milestones, and each one matters.
A first paycheck.Speaking up in a group.Learning a new skill.Building confidence to try something new.
These moments are triumphs—not because they meet a standard, but because they reflect growth, effort, and courage.
As Travis so perfectly describes it: “Independence means gaining courage to try new things.”
Belonging Builds Confidence
True growth happens in environments where people feel they belong.
Belonging means being welcomed as you are. It means being valued for your contributions. It means knowing your presence matters.
When adults with developmental disabilities experience genuine inclusion in their communities, workplaces, and relationships, it fosters confidence, resilience, and pride. At Chesapeake Connection, we strive to create spaces where individuals are not just supported but truly connected.
Pride in Identity, Pride in Self
Identity is powerful. It’s shaped by experiences, passions, relationships, and dreams.
We encourage the people we support to embrace who they are, take pride in their accomplishments, and see themselves as capable, worthy individuals. Growth isn’t about becoming someone else—it’s about becoming more fully yourself.
Moving Forward Together
Every person’s journey is different, and that’s something to celebrate.
At Chesapeake Connection, we are honored to walk alongside adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities as they grow, explore independence, and build lives filled with purpose and pride. Together, we redefine what’s possible—one story, one triumph, and one meaningful connection at a time.
Because independence isn’t about doing life alone. It’s about living it with confidence, dignity, and belonging.
